WHAT IS EXTERNAL WALL INSULATION?

Most properties built before 1930’s were made with solid walls, meaning they didn’t have internal cavities that could be filled with insulating materials. This leaves solid wall properties with the only option of external/internal insulation to improve the energy efficiency. The aim? To reduce the movement of heat leaving through the walls, dramatically reducing the heating demand.

Heating costs are on the rise in the UK and it’s becoming an increasing challenge for residents to keep their house warm without breaking the bank. UK properties lead the way in being the ‘leakiest’ for heat across Europe and External Wall Insulation is a very effective way to keep your bills in check, reduce your heat loss and minimise your carbon footprint. It’s a win-win for households and the environment.

IS MY PROPERTY SUITABLE?

Your property must meet the following criteria before External Wall Insulation can be installed:

- Be constructed of solid brick, stone or concrete (not timber-frame)
- Have walls that are structurally sound and not in need of repair
- Not be a listed building or in a conservation area/world heritage site
- Not have any signs of damp in the walls
- Have good access to the outer walls
- Not have cavity walls that are already filled or can be filled

If you’re not sure about whether your property is right, you can ask our team for help and they can advise further.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

A layer of high-performance insulating material (typically 90mm boards) is applied to your home’s exterior and finished with durable render. Because the insulation is installed on the outside of your property, it won’t reduce your internal floor space and can be fitted with minimal disruption.

External Wall Insulation (EWI) not only provides a weatherproof barrier to protect your brickwork but also improves sound insulation and helps prevent damp and condensation.

In addition to improving your home’s energy efficiency—leading to significant savings on heating bills—EWI renews the appearance of your walls, enhances property value, and creates a warmer, more comfortable living environment.

PLANNING PERMISSION

Planning permission is official approval from your local council or planning authority that allows you to carry out building work or make changes to your property.

For External Wall Insulation (EWI), planning permission may be needed because the work changes the appearance of the outside of your home. Not all properties require it, but as a company, we always recommend that homeowners check with their local planning authority before starting an EWI project.

To make things easy for you, we take care of the entire process—from planning designs, applications to securing approvals—ensuring a seamless, stress-free experience from start to finish.
