ROOM IN THE ROOF INSULATION

We have helped hundreds of residents across the east midlands insulate their attics in order to retain heat within their homes. We are able to access funding to partially/completely cover the cost of Room In Roof Insulation.

WHAT IS ROOM IN ROOF INSULATION?

Room in Roof Insulation (RIRI), also known as Attic or Roof Space Insulation, is specifically designed for properties with a converted loft or roof space that has a fixed staircase.

Often, these spaces have little to no insulation in the walls or sloping ceilings, which means a large amount of heat escapes from the home. Installing RIRI significantly reduces heat loss, improves comfort, and lowers energy bills.

The installation process involves fitting high-performance thermal boards over the existing plasterboard, creating an effective thermal barrier. This barrier locks warmth inside, reduces draughts, and makes your home more energy efficient throughout the year.

BENEFITS OF ROOM IN ROOF INSULATION

Many homes would gain from Room in Roof Insulation, and with grants and funding available, it’s a painless, super-effective way you can improve your energy efficiency rating. Room in Roof Insulation also provides the following benefits.

- Regulate Attic Room Temp

- Better For The Environment

- Increase Home Value

- Saving Money On Energy Bills

RIRI REQUIREMENTS

As part of our pre-installation assessment, our team will confirm that Room in Roof Insulation is the right solution for your home. To qualify, the following key requirements must be met:

  • The room must have a fixed staircase that allows you to walk down forwards (not an attic ladder).

  • At least half of the walls should be 1.8 meters or higher.

  • Rafters must be properly ventilated to prevent condensation.

  • The roof must be structurally sound, with no signs of damp, mould, rot, or damage.

RIRI INSULATION

Room in Roof Insulation involves installing insulation boards between the rafters beneath the existing plasterboard walls to help retain heat inside your home. In our system:

  • We use 62.5 mm plasterboard to overboard the existing slopes.

  • Where there are timber stud walls, we install 150 mm mineral fibre insulation, securely netted against the wall.

  • For residual loft spaces or loft areas above the Room in Roof, we fit 300 mm mineral fibre insulation.

These layers create a robust thermal barrier that keeps warm air inside while protecting against the cold from outside.

RIRI VS. LOFT

Traditional Loft Insulation is ideal for unused lofts. Insulation is laid across the loft floor between the joists, often with an additional layer at right angles, creating a thermal barrier that reduces heat loss. This type is typically made from mineral wool rolls and is perfect for lofts not used as living space or storage.

Room in Roof (RIR) Insulation is designed for lofts that have been converted into living areas or used for storage. Insulation boards are over boarded on top of the existing plasterboards, often combined with mineral fibre in stud walls or residual loft spaces. This method keeps the room warm providing an energy-efficient solution for occupied lofts.
